ISO 9001:2026 Quality Management Systems

The Basics you may want to know!

ISO 9001 is the world's most widely used quality management standard, certifying over one million organisations across 180+ countries. Published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the standard is periodically reviewed and revised to keep pace with changing business realities and ISO 9001:2026 is the newest edition, expected to be officially released on 16 September 2026, replacing ISO 9001:2015.

The 2026 revision keeps the same core structure, process approach and fundamental requirements that organizations are already familiar with. Rather than a complete overhaul, it is an evolutionary update that sharpens the standard's focus on quality culture, ethical behaviour, leadership accountability, sustainability and organizational resilience helping businesses of every size and industry build a QMS that is fit for today's environment.

Organizations already certified to ISO 9001:2015 will be given a transition period (typically 2–3 years) to move across to ISO 9001:2026, so there is no need for concern but early preparation makes the transition far smoother.

What are the main changes from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026?

While the overall framework remains familiar, a few notable updates stand out:

  • New terms and definitions (Clause 3): Additional QMS-specific terms are now built directly into the standard, reducing the need to cross-reference external documents like ISO 9000.
  • Sustainability in organizational context (Clause 4): Climate change and sustainability considerations are now explicitly part of understanding the organization and its context.
  • Quality culture and ethics in leadership (Clause 5): Top management is now expected to actively promote quality culture and ethical behaviour, not just demonstrate commitment to the QMS.
  • Sharper risk and opportunity thinking (Clause 6): Risk and opportunity are treated with greater distinction, encouraging more structured resilience and opportunity-based planning.
  • Broader awareness requirements (Clause 7): Staff awareness must now extend to quality culture and ethical behaviour, not just quality policy and objectives
  • Minor terminology updates to operations (Clause 8): Mostly editorial alignment, with limited impact on day-to-day operational requirements.
  • Unchanged core performance evaluation (Clause 9): Monitoring, measurement, internal audit and management review requirements remain largely the same, with a greater emphasis on using data for continual improvement.
  • Stronger leadership role in improvement (Clause 10): Leadership's role in driving continual improvement is made more explicit, going beyond corrective actions.
  • New Annex A: For the first time, ISO 9001 includes a dedicated annex offering detailed guidance to help organizations interpret and apply the clauses correctly.

In short: if your QMS is already well-implemented under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 9001:2026 will not require a rebuild but a gap analysis is strongly recommended to identify what needs strengthening.

Frequently asked questions

ISO 9001 provides a framework for establishing and maintaining a QMS that can help organizations improve their processes, enhance customer satisfaction, and achieve their business objectives.

ISO 9001:2026 is the newest revision of the globally recognised ISO 9001 Quality Management System standard, expected to be published on 16 September 2026, replacing ISO 9001:2015.

The 2026 revision keeps the same core structure and process approach as 2015 but introduces new terms and definitions, explicit sustainability and climate-related context requirements, a stronger emphasis on quality culture and ethical behaviour in leadership, sharper risk-versus-opportunity thinking, broader awareness requirements, a more explicit leadership role in continual improvement, and a brand-new Annex A with detailed implementation guidance. Overall, it is an evolutionary update rather than a complete overhaul.

Yes. ISO 9001:2015 certificates remain valid during the official transition period, which is expected to be around 2–3 years after ISO 9001:2026 is published. Organizations will need to transition to the new version before the transition period ends to maintain certification.

Implementing ISO 9001:2026 can bring numerous benefits to an organization, including improved efficiency, reduced waste, increased customer satisfaction, better risk and opportunity management, stronger ethical governance, and enhanced competitiveness.

To become certified to ISO 9001:2026, an organization must demonstrate that it has implemented a QMS that meets the requirements of the standard and has been audited by an accredited certification body.

No. If your QMS is already effectively implemented under ISO 9001:2015, transitioning to ISO 9001:2026 will not require a complete rebuild. A structured gap analysis with an experienced ISO consultant in Kuwait, such as Maqlink International, will identify exactly what needs to be updated.
