ISO STANDARDS HIGHLIGHTED AS KEY TO ADDRESSING SYSTEMIC CHALLENGES AT DAVOS 2023

In anticipation of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting held in Davos, the Global Risks Report 2023 has emphasized the need for collective and decisive action to tackle severe global risks. The report, now in its 18th edition, warns that several risks are nearing a tipping point, demanding immediate attention and long-term solutions for a more positive, inclusive, and stable world.

One of the critical areas of concern highlighted in the report is climate change and environmental risks. The authors emphasize that these risks, which include deadly heatwaves, floods, and droughts impacting various regions worldwide, are among the risks for which global preparedness is the weakest. The report suggests that such extreme weather events could become more frequent unless urgent and concerted action is taken.

Recognizing the urgent need for collaboration and cooperation, the report underscores the essential role of international organizations in global preparedness. It emphasizes the importance of revitalizing multilateral processes and organizations to effectively manage and mitigate global risks.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization), with its extensive range of over 24,000 published standards, is already making substantial contributions to address these challenges. ISO standards provide a common global framework for sustainable development, covering areas such as climate adaptation, climate mitigation, sustainable finance, trade, and various environmental and societal benefits for communities worldwide.

ISO Secretary-General Sergio Mujica emphasizes that collaboration is integral to ISO’s approach, promoting inclusivity and transcending national boundaries while delivering economic, environmental, and social advantages.

The upcoming Davos 2023 event serves as a reminder of the need for cooperation and optimism in a fragmented world. The WEF Annual Meeting provides a platform for diverse stakeholders to connect and work towards a better future. It emphasizes the importance of multistakeholder measures and a universal call to action to achieve effective and lasting change.

As the world faces increasingly complex challenges, ISO standards are poised to play a vital role in addressing systemic issues and fostering global collaboration to build a sustainable and resilient future.
